Johns Island SC Things to Do and Wadmalaw Island: A Local's Guide

Charleston gets all the attention, and rightfully so. With its cobblestone streets, waterfront views and James Beard-worthy restaurants. But some of our favorite Johns Island, SC things to do aren’t downtown at all. Just a short drive across the marsh, Johns Island, the largest island in South Carolina, and Wadmalaw offer a side of the Lowcountry that’s slower, greener, and charming, with standout stops like the historic Angel Oak Tree, Charleston Tea Garden, Deep Water Vineyard, and some of our favorite local places to eat. Johns Island also makes an easy base for exploring nearby Lowcountry attractions, barrier islands, and beaches while staying close to historic Charleston.

If you’ve been wondering what to do on Johns Island, SC, we’ve put together our favorite half-day route, the same one we send friends and guests on when they ask. It’s especially good for visitors who want a more authentic, less crowded day trip near Charleston, with a mix of natural beauty, local culture, friendly community, and a few off-the-beaten-path favorites on Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island.

How far is Johns Island from downtown Charleston?

Closer than you think! It’s about a 20 to 25 minute drive from downtown to the heart of Johns Island. Continue on to Wadmalaw Island and you’ll add another 20 minutes or so, putting the whole loop at around 45 minutes to an hour from the city. It’s an easy afternoon trip, and every minute of the drive is part of the charm, with oak-lined roads, marsh views, and hardly any other cars in sight.

Start under the Angel Oak Tree

No visit to Johns Island is complete without a stop at the Angel Oak, one of the oldest living oak trees east of the Mississippi, with a canopy that stretches over 17,000 square feet. Estimates put this beauty at 400 to 500 years old, making it an incredible piece of South Carolina history. Standing beneath those sprawling limbs, we believe every year of it. It’s free to visit and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to explore, so plan your morning around it. We always recommend going early because the light through the branches is something special.

Visit us at Charleston Tea Garden

From the Angel Oak, it’s a straight, scenic drive down to Wadmalaw Island and right to our front door. As North America’s only large-scale tea garden, we’ve been growing tea in the heart of the Lowcountry for generations, and we’d love for you to see it firsthand. Hop on our trolley tour to get up close to the fields and greenhouse, take a free tour of our factory to see how tea goes from leaf to cup, and be sure to stop by the gift shop for a glass of sweet tea. Fair warning, it’s the kind of thing that’s hard to say no to seconds of!

This stop is really the heart of any trip built around Wadmalaw Island things to do. It’s unhurried, it’s genuinely ours, filled with nature, and it’s unlike anything else you’ll find back downtown.

Make a neighborly stop at Deep Water Vineyard

Right next to us sits Deep Water Vineyard, South Carolina’s oldest working winery. It’s an easy add-on to your visit and a lovely way to spend extra time. Enjoy relaxing under the trees, sample muscadine wine made from grapes grown right on site, and enjoy the same easy pace that makes this corner of Wadmalaw so special.

Why Wadmalaw feels like the Lowcountry

If Johns Island feels rural, Wadmalaw feels like stepping back another fifty years. There are no strip malls out here, just dirt roads, tomato farms, Spanish moss, and marsh views that stretch on forever. Located in Charleston County, Wadmalaw has remained one of the area's best-preserved rural communities. This is the Lowcountry the way it used to look before Charleston grew up around it, and it’s part of our story that we’re proud to share with every guest who makes the drive.

Where to eat like a local on Johns Island

Round out your day with a meal and skip the downtown crowds. Here’s where we send our guests:

  • Hum Grocery, a great pit stop on your way out to us, known for fresh, locally harvested produce and easy picnic fare.

  • Cherry Point Seafood, a Wadmalaw favorite, sells fresh, local seafood raw and market-ready. Ready to bring home for your favorite dishes.

  • Wild Olive, upscale Italian tucked into a converted farmhouse, perfect for a relaxed dinner.

Any one of these will give you a genuine taste of the Lowcountry! Bonus, grab a sandwich from Hum Grocery to enjoy in the picnic area at Charleston Tea Garden.

Your half-day route, all together

If you want the short version, here's the loop we'd send you on:

  • Start at the Angel Oak Tree, located only 12 miles from Kiawah Island, around mid-morning before the crowds arrive.

  • Continue to Wadmalaw Island and spend some time with us at Charleston Tea Garden.

  • Drive next door to Deep Water Vineyard for a tasting.

  • Head back through Johns Island for lunch or dinner at one of our favorite local spots.

If you have extra time, consider extending your adventure to a nearby state park or exploring more of the surrounding barrier islands that make this corner of the South Carolina coast so unique.

All told, plan on four to five hours, though we won't blame you if you linger longer. Out here, that's kind of the point.
